I think it's an easier sell for the mainstream audience that buys one to at most three games a year, rather than those who buy one or more a month. There’s just no way I’ll shell that much out for a single game, even for my favorite series. For me, €40 is already in the territory where I'll think long and hard about whether I need to play it right now, and that's already 50% off by new standards. More so now that €79.99 is becoming a thing. I can count the number of games I’ve bought full-price at launch over the past ten years on one hand though. just speaking for me personally as a developer, I don’t work for Sony, I don’t know what the numbers are. “It’s like, God of War got whatever number millions of sales at launch and, you know, Days Gone didn’t. “I’m just saying, you don’t, but don’t complain if a game doesn’t get a sequel if it wasn’t supported at launch,” Garvin replied. “But how do you know you love a game until you’ve played it?” Jaffe responded. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen gamers say ‘yeah, I got that on sale, I got it through PS Plus, whatever’.”

“If you love a game, buy it at fucking full price. “I do have an opinion on something that your audience may find of interest, and it might piss some of them off,” Garvin replied.

John Garvin was speaking to game designer David Jaffe on Jaffe’s YouTube show, where he was asked if he’d heard anything about any “meaningful uptick of engagement” with Days Gone since the game was added to the PlayStation Plus Collection on PS5. Whether Days Gone 2 will see the light of day or not remains to be seen. The creative director and writer of Days Gone has said that players should buy games at full price if they like them, instead of waiting for them to go on sale or be given away as part of services like PlayStation Plus. I’m saying that as a company making products for millions of people, it’s on us to make sure that it is profitable and also appeal to a wide enough audience to grow the brand.”

“I’m not saying in any way that we should have all bought into political correctness and become woke and done all the things to satisfy social justice warriors – I’m not saying that at all. “I completely agree that it was on me and Jeff, and the guys at Bend Studio, and on all of us to create something that would have wider appeal, that would avoid some of the pitfalls that were kind of self-inflicted,” he continued. Garvin then went on to take the blame for Days Gone not appealing to a wider audience, and bizarrely suggested that the game may have done better if it leaned towards being woke and politically correct. “If you’re the creative director on a franchise and your game is coming in at a 70, you’re not gonna be a creative director on that franchise for very long.” “This is just the reality of Sony,” said Garvin. Garvin, who resigned shortly after the game’s release, made the aforementioned comment in a video interview with God of War creator, David Jaffe, who runs his own YouTube channel.

Last week, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that Sony cancelled a Days Gone 2 pitch, following which a number of the game’s developers left Bend Studio. Former Bend Studio staffer and Days Gone director John Garvin claims that, in his opinion, “Metacritic score is everything” to Sony.
